The Long Haul

We had a dream so we set sail
on I-95 we made the deal
At a North Carolina truck stop I saw her smile
the car broke down the very next mile
Karma I thought as I screamed at the sky
rain began to fall as I questioned why
why all the things we dream never seem to fly
why all the cars slowdown look over and then drive by
The smell of wildflowers flew through the air
her smile wilted as I watched her stand there
She said, "dreams like this don't die,
curl into nothing and say goodbye"
The truth, the truth it could not deny
as we both walked on by
that both our lives would change in that rainy day sky
Moments ago
as the sun set
I thought of our dream
and what we mean
when we make a promise
we know we can't keep safe
Maybe if I held her tightly or
that car didn't break down
or the wound of that day's accident
didn't echo in those southern winds
then maybe, maybe I wouldn't be telling you this
on a night of nothingness years later
when the past pours down on the roof
and the fires about to burn out-
waves crashing for the door
wash me away
expose my truths
The fire will burn out
sleep will settle in slowly and softly
Tomorrow we'll start again
I'll try and change
while the southern storms
the wildflowers and
sadness will
linger about
in the shadows we all stand in
