Joe

Grandpa Joe
walked all day in the snow
his footprints dying in the white that did blow
Grandpa Joe
had a smile that always would glow
and with all he used to know
sadly reaped just what he did sow

On a peculiar sun scattered morn
a grandfather taught a boy what it was to be a man
My naivety scolded me
for at first I simply did not understand
the timeless lesson Grandpa Joe taught that day in the sand

on this fateful night many moons later I began to understand

With his hands shaking
our frail bodies on a sailboat the sun baking
his green eyes gleamed amongst his chinawhite skin
there we stood
one life ending
one about to
begin

He said "son"
as the heat it burned
and the tides they turned
"a man is as strong as the woman on his side
Find a bright light someday and make her you're bride"

Grandpa Joe
so full-of-pride
left us and walked away
his words I thought of just today
on this hazy night
his words are clear
my heart a bit broken
at least the words of Grandpa Joe
finally have been spoken
