If smiles come from the sun,
Then why do they shine when having fun,
Even when it is dark and the day is done?
I think we lock them away,
And save them not for just a rainy day;
But when the moment calls for light,
For lucidity,
Even when we lack the might.
And then we live,
In and out of this warming sight.
The head holds all these
thoughts,
While our body relives them, like little dots,
Poking everywhere,
Making the moment clear,
These lasting pictures,
Of who you are,
Are not all that far.
They sat in the car,
Or on a stool in that bar.
You reach for them in the light,
When everything else is out-of-sight,
And these pictures tell you it's alright.
That today was today, but tonight is tonight.
The music slows for once,
It seems to dissipate in thin air.
Everyone moves real slow,
As if they know,
That the sun just shot through,
And there is nothing left to do.
But let the horns take you away,
Let her sultry voice make your day,
And remember-
today was today,
But tonight is tonight.
And the memory of the way you just smiled makes it feel just right.
